1 Day Guided Tour in Ait ben haddou and arround the valley more_vert

Ait ben Haddou is more than just a film set, though; it is a ksar, a fortified village whose history goes back almost a thousand years, although the maze of narrow and crenulated towers you see these days are mainly from the 17th century. As a strategic stop for caravans of camels, often numbering hundreds, on the trans-Saharan trade route from the Sudan to Marrakech carrying gold, silver and slaves and returning with salt, it would have been a thriving town, home to thousands. As well a private homes – everything from small palaces to modest one-room dwellings – there were communal areas including a public square, a mosque, a caravanserai to house those travelling with the caravans, grain threshing areas outside the ramparts, a fortified granary ( agadir) at the top of the village, the last redoubt in time of invasion, and two cemeteries, Muslim and Jewish..
With me you will see and feel more.....:)

Just there, that patch there, just by the side of that small hill, see it?”
Well, yes, I did see it, a more-or-less round piece of bare ground completely lacking any significance other than being similar to many other pieces of ground around Ait ben Haddou. Rachid(Me) was trying to show me where the scene in Gladiator was shot, the one with Oliver Reed looking sufficiently Arab-ish as he explains to the slaves, including the disgraced general Maximus, played by Russell Crowe, that “I did not pay good money for you for your company. I paid it so that I could profit from your death”. (Cut to pile of corpses being picked over by vultures.

Fortunately for Ridley Scott, Gladiator’s director, a few rough poles to act as stockades and a couple of walls plastered with adobe, and his gladiatorial village was virtually there, given the presence of the majestic Ait ben Haddou and the dessert landscape around it. (He was obviously so inspired by the location that he came back to shoot the Holy Land scenes for Kingdom of Heaven.) These are just a couple in a long catalogue of films that have used this ancient citadel as a set; Lawrence of Arabia, The Last Temptation of Christ, Kundun, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, and part of the TV series Game of Thrones amongst them

Full-Day Guided Quad Tour of Ait Ben Haddou and Kasbah of Telouet more_vert
*$296 AUD Book

On this full day guided quad/ATV excursion, we will visit a magnificent kasbah which belongs to the last royal family's of the Atlas Region in Morocco. We will drive along the beautiful Ounila Valley with many traditional Berber villages. This tour is perfect for those who wants some excitement but also interested in the history and architecture of the Atlas region. Lunch in included.

This tour is recommended only between October and March since part of the roads from Ait Ben Haddou to Telouet is not off-road (tarmac). It will be very hot (>40c) in the summer for both the driver and the quads.

After your guide gave a brief explanation on the control of our quad and road safety, we depart from Ait Ben Haddou around 9am. On the way to Glaoui Kasbah, we will drive along the beautiful Ounila Valley where many old Berber villages are located. There are many viewpoints where you can enjoy panorama views of this expansive valley, clutters of clay buildings with small kasbahs and mosques in between. You may see locals in traditional costumes walking on the side of road to visit friends and family on special days. (Please be sensitive when taking photos of locals especially women.)

We will also pass through a small mine where workers extract precious minerals out of the colorful rocks in this area in the past. Old post stations for defense on top of small hills can be seen from the road. Further on, we will pass a small forest on the side of the road, a rare sight in this semi-desert region.

After a few hours, we finally arrive at this famous yet non-touristy Kasbah of Glaoui in Telouet, one of the most extraordinary sights of the Atlas. We will have lunch here at a guest house restaurant outside the kasbah first. After lunch, you can buy a ticket and visit the inside of this complex at your leisure.

Lies at an elevation of 1,800 m (5,900 ft), the Kasbah of Glaoui is a glimpse of the style of Moroccan political government and power still within living memory. Pasha Glaoui was ousted from the Bahia Palace and died of cancer shortly after exile in Telouet after independence. As a palace of El Glaoui family, 300 artisans worked on salons faceted with stucco, zellij and painted cedar ceilings during construction. Although some of the rooms have fallen into ruin after over a half-century of decay, the 2nd-floor reception rooms still remain its glory as Telouet’s former position as the center of a trans-Saharan trading empire. Work was underway to restore the property in 2010. After your visit, we will drive back to Ait Ben Haddou through the windy road of the Ounila Valley.

AIT BENHADDOU & TELOUET DAY TRIP more_vert
*$239 AUD Book
close
Ait Ben Haddou and Telouet Kasbahs day trip will give you the chance to experience the best of the south, learn more about the Glaoui tribes and visit the most famous kasbahs of Morocco. Cross the Atlas Mountains and take the road to the Sahara Desert and the old caravane routes.

Ait benhadou and Telouet Kasbahs day trip takes you across the chain of the High Atlas mountains and over the famous Tizi-n-Tichka pass, one of the most dramatic passes in Morocco (The governement started a project to renovate a big part of the road after a tragic bus accident in 2012 and the work is still ongoing due to the harsh winter climate and geography). All along the road you can see Berber villages scattered along the side of the mountains, sometimes hard to distinguish from the mountainous entourage. As you reach the far side of the mountains the landscape changes drastically, becoming semi-arid and desert-like as the chain of the Atlas mountains acts as barrier separating the Mediterranean climate of the north from the Arid desertic winds on the south-east.
After the Tichka pass 2162m, we leave the main road and take a side road to the Telouet Kasbah, which belonged to the Pacha of the Atlas, the Glaoui, and stands in ruins after the last Pasha fled the country after the departure of the French armies. In the first kasbah you will visit only a few rooms that can be seen, as much of the kasbah has been closed off because of the falling ceilings and unsafe walls. However, the tiled walls, fluted pillars, beautifully painted wooden ceilings and coloured glass windows of the reception rooms allow you to imagine what it was like in its prime.
From there you will continue to at Ait Ben Haddou along the newly asphalted road. Once in the village, you will get a closer look at the Kasbah's architecture with turrets on all the buildings, adorned with grilled windows and soft peach coloured walls. These traditional houses are made of adobe, highly suitable for the climat conditions of the south and the summets of the mountains because it is an efficient temperature isolator and the building materials are abundant and require no transportation or significant transformation process. The afternoon is spent exploring the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Benhaddou, This is the most famous of all Moroccan kasbahs, largely due to its appearance in many Hollywood blockbusters. It was one of the most important fortress strongholds on the old Salt Road caravan routes, where traders brought slaves, gold, ivory and salt from sub-Saharan Africa to Marrakech and beyond. Before leaving Ait Benhaddou, you will take on last glimps of the village from a distant point offering a wonderful panoramic view especially under clear blue skies.
