Venture off the beaten path to get a taste of local life in Essaouira on this 3-hour walking tour. Following a local guide, walk along the historical city ramparts to a panoramic lookout point, and check out local art at a colorful souk in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Medina of Essaouira. Sample traditional Moroccan treats at local pastry shops, eat fresh seafood side-by-side with locals at the lively fish market, and sip specialty Moroccan tea at a traditional herbalist shop. This tour incorporates all your senses to give you a great overview of Essaouira.

Meet your guide at Bab Sba in the late morning to begin your 3-hour food and art tour of Essaouira. This fascinating city often flies under the radar of visitors, and so the streets are filled with authentic cultural delights just waiting to be discovered.

Start with a visit to the oldest pastry shop in the city, and sample traditional Moroccan pastries made with time-honored family recipes. Continue walking onto the city ramparts. These fortifications offer a glimpse into how the old seaport village was once protected against invasion. Stop at an old watchtower, and enjoy panoramic views from a little-known lookout point away from the tourist crowds. Gaze out at the city as your guide points out all the must-see landmarks.

Next, make your way into the center of all the action: the Medina of Essaouira. This UNESCO World Heritage-listed area is an outstanding example of late-18th-century fortifications in Morocco. Wander around the colorful souks and meet local artists to check out their art.

After getting your art fix, head to the bustling seaside fish market, where fishermen haul in their daily catch. Sit side-by-side with locals at a wooden table for a savory lunch of grilled fish (usually sardines, a local favorite). For dessert, head to a shop just outside the medina to try a typical Moroccan treat. Then, wash it down with a cup of aromatic tea at a traditional herbalist's shop.

Your tour ends near Bab Doukkala. Your guide will be happy to give you recommendations on other things to do and see in Essaouira, or offer directions back to your hotel.

Experience Morocco: Essaouira Gnawa Music and Dance Performances more_vert
*$92 AUD Book
close
On this evening tour in Essaouira, step inside the world of the 'gnawa,' an Afro-Moroccan group whose music, culture and traditions are the heartbeat of Morocco. Meet gnawa masters, jam with local musicians, and watch dance performances to experience this addictive music genre first-hand, in places that many Essaouira visitors don’t know about. In true local style, finish at a popular music spot in town to socialize some more. Numbers are limited to 8 on this small-group tour, ensuring a more personalized cultural experience.

Meet under Essaouira’s clock tower in the evening for your 3-hour gnawa music tour, a unique experience that takes you back in time to discover Morocco's music culture, history and traditions.

Walk through the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Medina of Essaouira, the walled Arab quarter, and learn about the gnawa people and their customs from your guide. Originating from North and West Africa, gnawas are known for their ancient African-Islamic music, whose songs are marked by low-toned rhythms, chants, hand-clapping and cymbals. Performances range from upbeat social gatherings to religious rituals.

Your first stop is a zaouia, or sacred temple of the gnawa people. Traditional lila rituals take place here to drive out evil spirits and treat psychological ills, and often last for hours at a time. Next, meet a gnawa dancer (or kuyu) and head inside their home for a gnawa dance demonstration. Watch typical dance moves accompanied by an explanation of the dancer’s traditional clothing. Often made at home, these intricate designs include bold colors, embroidery and shells.

Then, it’s off to meet a gnawa maalem, or master, who acts as the leader of any gnawa troupe. Visit the maalem's private quarters to see how the traditional guembri instrument is made and hear some songs played. Share in their vast traditional knowledge and experience something usually reserved for gnawi, musicians and their friends and family.

Come full circle from gnawa’s past to present by finishing the evening in true local style: enjoying live music with a drink in hand (own expense). Stay at this local music venue as long as you like, and feel free to ask your guide about other places to continue enjoying gnawa music. Recently, the style has been fused with Western and Latin music, making it perfect music for dancing, if you're in the mood!

During your time here, you’ll understand why many consider Fez as having the best-preserved old city in the Arab world. In fact, the Medina of Fez is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Exploring the narrow streets of this medieval city, you’ll see a brilliant display of traditional Moroccan architecture, zillige tiling and elaborately painted and sculpted woodwork.
