Ger District of Ulaanbaatar Private Day Tour Including Lunch more_vert
*$132 AUD Book
close

Ulaanbaatar’s ger district is home to hundreds of thousand of people, packed tightly in astonishing density, which is also what the city used to look like before the old Soviet apartments started declaring itself. A ger district is a narrow alleyway formed by joining together household fences. When you hear people speak of “the ger district,” they often refer to the neighborhoods formed by these alleys. This tour will take you to visit the renowned ger district of Ulaanbaatar for a day!

Ulaanbaatar’s less prosperous ger districts are far on the mountain and cramped; however, they are still an important part of the city’s history. Each ger district has its own name and characters with its own set of stories. Your private tour guide will meet you or your small and intimate group at the location of your choice in Ulaanbaatar, and then travel to Gandantegchilen Monastery where everyone attends the daily ancient ritual of Buddhism.

You will see a very different side of Ulaanbaatar that most tourists do not experience. Meet local inhabitants of this less-prosperous area and learn about what daily life is like for them. Learn about the history and culture of the area from your guide as you wind through the narrow lanes and alleyways, walk down the hill, and stop at the local factories and shops.

Although this tour will include more of the local lifestyle and area of Ger district than any other standard city sightseeing tour, you will not leave Ulaanbaatar without visiting iconic attractions such as Bogd Khan's Palace Museum, Mongolian National Modern Art Gallery, Gandantegchinlen Monastery, Migjid Janraisig Sum, Bogd Khan Uul National Park, and Genghis Khan Square.

In addition to showing you beautiful Ulaanbaatar, your knowledgeable private guide could converse with you about anything from culture to culinary art and from politics to quantum physics. After a taste of Ulaanbaatar, you will be transferred back to the location of your choice in the city.

1 Day Shaman Tour Including Lunch more_vert
*$268 AUD Book

Mongolian shamanism is an all-encompassing system of belief that includes medicine, religion, a cult of nature, and a cult of ancestor worship. In 13th century, the leading shaman declared Genghis Khan the representative of Mongke Koko Tengri (the "Eternal Blue Sky"), the supreme god of the Mongols. With this declaration of divine status, it was accepted that his destiny was to rule the world. Religious tolerance was practiced in the Mongol Empire; however, to defy the Great Khan was equivalent of defying the will of God. Central to the system were the activities of male and female intercessors between the human world and the spirit world, Shamans (böö) and Shamanesses (udgan). Yet, they were not the only ones who could communicate with the spirit world. Nobles and clan leaders also performed spiritual functions and so did commoners. The hierarchy of Mongolian clan-based society was reflected in the manner of worship.

Mongolian and southern Siberian shamanism were originally developed by Stone Age hunters and Bronze Age herdsmen and later evolved into the psyche of the Mongols today. The steppe dwelling peoples of Eurasia worship Eternal Heaven (Munkh Tenger) above and Mother Earth (Etugan) below as well as the ancestral and natural spirits. The cosmology of Mongolian shamanism and its eight customary rituals are based on the concept that there are many invisible worlds in addition to the visible one. The shaman interacts with many other worlds or universes, and that interaction with spirits is an important part of shamans’ work. Each day, month, and year, shamans constantly perform their work with poetic invocations, musics, dances, and creative arts. A shaman is an intermediary between this world and the spirit world. They act on behalf of the community conducting ceremonial rituals, healing the people, and helping to guide others on the shamanic path. A shaman’s life belongs to the village and it is their responsibility to ensure the well being of the family, the community, and all of creation. In this way the shaman helps to maintain balance and harmony on both a personal and planetary level.

In the morning at 10am, you will embark for the tour to Shaman. This trip allows you to visit a wide assortments of interesting and divine experiences in your life. He or she will answer all the questions you have ever been wondered and puzzled. It is important for you to open up yourself fully and to express yourself freely. It is also important to follow your tour guide's advice on how to handle your questions throughout the event. The activity should be completed by late afternoon or early evening depending on your questions and your requests. You will be transferred back to your hotel where this tour concludes.

The tour ends with a stop at a local cashmere and wool factory outlet where you may purchase garments knit from the fine fibers of Mongolian goats. Lunch, bottled water, and hotel pickup and drop-off are included.

Your tour of Mongolia's capital begins with a pickup at your centrally located hotel. The first stop is Chingghis Khan Square, the city’s geographic and social center, with its famous statue of the founder of the Mongolian Empire mounted on his horse. Chinese-style pagodas and courtyards retain their original splendor and the palace museum preserves more than 8,000 artifacts spanning 400 years of history, including Buddhist sculptures, intricately painted thangkas, a yurt lined with the hides of 150 snow leopards, and elaborate fur and pearl-adored brocade royal garments.

In the afternoon, a journey by 3-wheeled cyclo through Ulaanbaatar’s famous Black Market is an exhilarating experience for any visitor. Ulaanbaatar has many interesting museums about history, culture, and nature that you must visit to better appreciate Mongolia. This private tour will take you to visit the highlight of them.

This tour is one of the best tours you will find in Ulaanbaatar covering museums of history, culture, and nature of Mongolia. Your tour starts with pickup from the appointed gathering place at 10am by an experienced, knowledgeable, and personable tour guide and then set off for a day. You will be visiting the following museums during this trip:

Zanabazar Museum: Bogdo Zanabazar, also known as Undur Gegeen Zanabazar and Bogd Jivzundamba (1635-1723), was the grandson of Avtai Sain Khan and a direct descendant of Genghis Khan. Zanabazar earned his place in art history through combining religious and traditional folk arts enriched by traditional Mongol concept of beauty in his representations of deities.

Mongolian National Museum: It is one of the national museums of Mongolia located in Ulaanbaatar. The National Museum of Mongolia is a cultural, scientific and educational organization which is responsible for the collection, conservation and interpretation of the objects.

Bogd Khan Palace Museum: This is known as “Winter Palace” and built between 1893 and 1903, the complex includes six temples. Each one of them contains Buddhist artwork including sculptures and Thangka. It is one of the few Mongolian historical attractions which have neither been destroyed by the Soviets nor the Communist Mongolians. On display, there are many of the Bogd Khan's possessions such as his throne, bed, his collection of art and stuffed animals, his ornate ceremonial ger, a pair of ceremonial boots (given to the Khan by Russian Tsar Nicholas II) and a jeweled regalia worn by the Bogd Khan's pet elephant.

Choijin Lama Temple Museum: This temple museum is a hidden gem of architecture and history situated in the middle of downtown Ulaanbaatar. It was the home of Luvsan Haidav Choijin Lama ("Choijin" is an honorary title given to some monks), the state oracle and brother of the Bogd Khan. Construction of the monastery commenced in 1904 and was completed four years later. It was closed in 1938 and probably would have been demolished had it not been saved in 1942 to serve as a museum demonstrating the "feudal" ways of the past. Although religious freedom in Mongolia liberated in 1990, this monastery is no longer an active place of worship.

Salsa's roots are based on different genres such as Cuban Son and Puerto Rican rhythms. However, as it is also a genre of music, it opens to extemporization, and thus continuously evolving. The modern salsa styles are linked and named to the unique geographic areas from where it evolved. There are often believers of each of these styles outside of their home land. Characteristics that may identify a style includes basic steps, timing,  foot patterns, body rolls and movements, attitude, turns and figures, dance influences and the way partners holding each other. The point in a bar music where the break step is taken (the slightly larger step) and the way the step moves can often be used to identify a style.

Incorporating other dance styling practices into salsa has become very common for both men and women including leg work, arm work, spins, body movement, rolls, even hand styling, body isolation, shoulder shimmies, acrobatics and lifts.

Latin American styles originate from Cuba, Puerto Rico and surrounding Caribbean islands including the Dominican Republic. It further expands to Venezuela, Colombia and the other parts of Latin America. Also, there exists the "Miami" style which is a fusion of some Cuban and North American style elements of dancing.

Throat singing is an amazing Mongolian practice that you should not miss. You will learn of the history and different types of throat singing as well as the practical approach for how to perform it through the knowledgeable team. By the end of the lesson, you will gain an appreciation of this art that has been passed down through generations.

After being picked up from your centrally located hotel in Ulaanbaatar at your requested time, you will head to the throat singing lesson where you will learn the subtle nuance of Khoomei, one of the most popular forms of Tuvan throat singing. Throat singing involves the whistling of a finely embellish melody with the tip of the tongue and the front teeth escorted simultaneously by a lower and flat base tone created in the throat which harmonizes with the higher melody. Mongol Khoomei involves producing two simultaneous tones with the human voice involving special ways of breathing which is a high skillful job. One tone comes out as a whistle-like sound as a result of held breath being forced out from the chest through the throat in a specific way while the lower tone sounding as bass. Khoomei is considered as a musical art and not exactly singing but the uniqueness is using one’s throat as an instrument for the purpose.

At the end of your lesson, you will be dropped back off at your hotel.

Step back in time on this exhilarating 4-day mountain bike tour of the Khan Khenty range, covering every type of landscape from lush meadows, wooded hills, grassy river valleys and rugged mountains. As the region is sparsely populated, and each encounter with local people is potentially an authentic cultural exchange, we will camp next to nomadic families and their Ger, and join in on their daily activities for an authentic and unforgettable firsthand experience.

We cycle the total of 130.5mi (210km) over the course of four days on this moderately challenging trip, mainly on rough off-road jeep tracks. This trip is suitable for riders with some mountain biking experience, and a support vehicle travels behind the group to support us.

Day 1
We start our 4-day adventure by riding from the gateway to the Khan Khenty National Park, through a spectacular land of wooded mountains and exceptional granite formations, and over a quiet pass to the valley of the Terelj River. Here, we will get the chance to experience nomadic life firsthand as we camp next to local families and their Ger, and help out with their every-day chores.

Day 2

Day 3
After a hearty breakfast we ride to Janchivlan Hill and enjoy the freedom of cycling off road all day. We camp near a nomadic family and share a delicious, traditional dinner with our friendly hosts.

Day 4
On our fourth and last day we will visit a live 13th Century museum where we are required to leave behind any modern life items upon entry. There is also an option to use a horse or camel and pay a visit to an ancient town nearby before your transfer to Ulaanbaatar.
