Datong is one of the nine ancient capitals in China with numerous historic relics in its territory. It’s a low-key city beyond the tourist trail but implies great energy. Take this one day private tour to visit the famous Yungang Grottoes, one of Chinese four grotto art treasures and the Hanging Temple, the earliest and best preserved high-altitude wooden cliff-building in China. With our professional tour guide and driver, you will make the largest value of this day to learn the background knowledge of the relics.

In the morning at some 8:30 am, meet your guide and driver who will hold a board with your name in your Datong downtown hotel lobby. Firstly we drive westwards to Yungang Grottoes. As the first batch of key cultural relics under state protection, also on the world heritage list, Yuagang Grottoes has a highly cultural and artistic meaning. It not only shows the traditional Chinese artistic style, but also incorporates the art characteristics of ancient India, the western regions and the Central Plain. Yungang Grottoes is the beginning of the "sinicization" of Chinese grotto art, which mainly stores 45 grottoes and 51,000 stone statues.
After a delicious Chinese style lunch, you will be transferred to Hanging Temple. Located between the cliffs of Mt. Hengshan, it is the only unique temple in China that integrates Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. The whole monastery is built in wooden framework structure. Though not very big, it astonishes people by the building design that relies on a mortise joint and embeds into the cliff without falling down. Owning a history over 1,500 years, many notable literati and poets have left words to show their amazing feeling. If time permits after Hanging Temple, we will also pay a visit to Nine-Dragon Wall. The wall was built in late Ming Dynasty, which is composed of coloured glaze. Nine dragons are different in shape and form, each of which is connected by water grass, white clouds and rocks. It presents the superb sculpture skills of ancient China. (If time is not enough for Nine-Dragon Wall, you will be refunded its entrance fee)
When finishing all sites, you will be transferred back to your Datong downtown hotel.

Get a fresh take on a UNESCO World Heritage Site, China's iconic Great Wall, on this 9-hour private tour from Datong. Explore the 16th-century fortress and garrison town at Deshengbu, then drive to Zhenchuankou, where you'll hike for two to four hours along the rammed earth wall.

Your personal guide will collect you from your Datong hotel at 8am for the drive to the Deshengbu Fortress about 28 miles (45 kilometers) northwest of Datong.

There used to be 52 fortresses along the 221-mile (335-kilometer) stretch of Datong Outer Great Wall: Deshengbu, built in 1574, protects an important pass that links Datong to Inner Mongolia. The fortress' imposing walls and mighty city gate lead into a typical Great Wall garrison town: you'll spend around an hour exploring the fort and the village. Your guide will give you suggestions as to where to eat lunch, which is at your own expense, and help you navigate the menu.

After lunch, you'll drive another 19 miles (30 kilometers) or so to reach the Datong Great Wall at the timeless Chinese village of Zhenchuankou. Like much of the Great Wall around Datong, it was made of tamped earth: amazingly, the construction has withstood wind, rain, and snow for more than five centuries. It still stands proud above the fields, around five meters tall in places, and is dotted with beacons and guard towers.

You'll hike along this rammed earth wall for around two to four hours. When your hike is finished, your driver will collect you, and transfer you back to your hotel, arriving around 5pm.
